With WhatsApp team, cops to keep tabs on rumours

GHAZIABAD: Alarmed via the spate of rumour-driven mob lynchings around the nation, the UP Police has decided to duplicate the citizen volunteer pressure (CVF) initiative of Ghaziabad across all police stations within the state, however with a brand new identify — virtual volunteers.
Launched via Ghaziabad police a year ago as part of group policing project, CVF has helped police officers in cracking several blind crime cases and keeping up law and order.

Director general of UP, OP Singh, has now authorized the project for all 1,469 police stations of the state, in order to prevent spread of faux news and rumours.

“A wish to have such a team of active electorate used to be felt to help take a look at rumours being circulated on WhatsApp and different media. The rumours have resulted in clashes and even deaths of many innocent persons,” the DGP workplace said in a circular.

Sources instructed TOI virtual volunteers could be entrusted with the job of circulating right kind information towards rumours on social media or faux news, besides informing native police officers about the same.

Under the state-wide initiative, each and every police station can have 250 such members on a WhatsApp team. The members could be lecturers, principals, retired military and police staff, native reporters and religious leaders among others.

A committee beneath the chairmanship of SSP will probably be shaped in each and every district for collection of virtual volunteers. Other members of committee are SP (City), circle officials, SHOs and SP (crime). The SHO and circle officer of a space will be the team administrators. Members of the district media cell can be part of the group, resources said.


The virtual volunteers may also stay a tab on suspicious other people staying at motels and inns, eve-teasers out of doors colleges, colleges and educational institutes. They can also give information about land disputes.


“It is a second of significant pleasure for Ghaziabad Police,” said SP (city) Akash Tomar, who introduced CVF initiative in August 2017.


“Within a year, the project grew in its scope which integrated cyber crimes and checking rumours and at the moment there are over 100 members in CVF core committee,” he added.
