MUMBAI: Two days after Congress member and previous Union house minister Sushilkumar Shinde said no proposal to prohibit the Sanatan Sanstha had reached him when the Congress-NCP used to be in energy in Maharashtra, some other Congress member Prithviraj Chavan said that after he used to be CM of Maharashtra from November 2010 to September 2014, his government had suo moto submitted a plea to the Centre for a ban at the right-wing outfit “in view of its dangerous actions”.

“I had extended discussions with the then house minister R R Patil. In view of the damaging actions of Sanatan Sanstha, we submitted a suggestion to the Central government in April 2011. We then suggested the Centre to immediately ban the group. This used to be much prior to rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar used to be shot dead in Pune in August 2013,” Chavan told TOI.

Chavan said that after the proposal used to be submitted to the Centre, Congress chief P Chidambaram used to be the Union house minister, so Sushilkumar Shinde used to be now not related to the topic in any way. “After we submitted the proposal, Chidambaram asked for more info at the actions of Sanatan Sanstha. All the ideas sought by him used to be submitted to the Centre.”

Chavan said that it used to be the view of the Congress-NCP government that the mindset and beliefs that killed Mahatma Gandhi used to be accountable for the killing of rationalists reminiscent of Dabholkar and Govind Pansare. “There is basically no exchange within the view of the Congress at the proposal to demand a ban at the Sanstha,” he said.


In addition to submitting a suggestion to the Centre, Chavan said, the state government led by him had submitted crucial knowledge to the Bombay prime court docket in reference to a petition pending prior to it. “The petitioner too had demanded a ban on Sanatan Sanstha. The plea continues to be pending prior to the prime court docket,” he said.


When the issue of a ban at the workforce used to be raised in both properties of the state legislature by the Congress, the BJP-led state government used to be non-committal. However, BJP has now changed its stand in view of new traits, specifically the disclosures made by the CBI and ATS prior to the courts. “Now the state government says that it'll recommend to the Centre that it should ban Sanatan Sanstha,” Chavan said.
