NEW DELHI: A face-off may be brewing between WhatsApp and the federal government over the problem of the traceability of messages exchanged at the Facebook-owned messaging carrier. IT and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had claimed on Tuesday that WhatsApp used to be agreeable to explore technical solutions to trace the source of make a selection messages.


WhatsApp is of the view that the move will undermine end-to-end encryption and have an effect on privacy of users. “Building traceability would undermine end-to-end encryption and the personal nature of WhatsApp, developing the potential for serious misuse. WhatsApp won't weaken the privacy protections we offer,” the company spokesperson advised PTI.


Having sought to shift the entire blame for lynchings pushed by way of pretend information at the messenger carrier, the federal government seems unwilling to simply accept that.


A senior ministry legit advised TOI, “Tracing the source of sinister campaigns — that lead to incidents equivalent to lynching, revenge porn — is critical, and the federal government stands company at the call for that WhatsApp supply technical solutions to identify the similar.”


The legit additional added, “They need to proceed to explore technical innovations wherein, in case of large-scale circulate of provocative and nefarious messages that lead to violence and crime, the starting place can be ascertained.”
