Death toll rises to 35 in Italy bridge collapse; 3 missing

ROME: Rescue and restoration efforts continued in the course of the night into the morning in Italy following the collapse of a freeway bridge in Genoa, while government raised the loss of life toll to 35 with 3 lacking.


Rescuers searched via heaps of concrete slabs and metal for survivors or bodies from the collapse an afternoon earlier at the eve of Wednesday's summer Ferragosto vacation.


State radio on Wednesday quoted the prefect's place of work confirming a loss of life toll of 35 and denying some news stories that put it at 38.


About a dozen other folks remained hospitalised in severe situation.


What caused an 80-meter (260-foot) long stretch of freeway to break off from the 45-meter (150 foot) top Morandi Bridge in the northwestern port town is underneath investigation. There had been proposals to improve the 1967 bridge.
