NEW DELHI: It was once foster daughter Namita Bhattacharya who performed the last rites of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, giving hearth to the pyre after the standard ‘parikrama’ (circumambulation) with different members of the family.
Soon after moving scenes at Vajpayee’s cremation, feedback on social media hailed Namita’s position as an empowering act for gender equality with visuals of the last rites of public figures extra frequently related to male kin reminiscent of sons and brothers sporting out the ‘fire-giving’ ritual.
