Govt, WhatsApp differ on message traceability

NEW DELHI: A face-off could also be brewing between WhatsApp and the federal government over the issue of the traceability of messages exchanged on the Facebook-owned messaging provider. IT and legislation minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had claimed on Tuesday that WhatsApp used to be agreeable to explore technical answers to track the supply of make a selection messages.


WhatsApp is of the view that the move will undermine end-to-end encryption and have an effect on privacy of customers. “Building traceability would undermine end-to-end encryption and the non-public nature of WhatsApp, creating the opportunity of severe misuse. WhatsApp will not weaken the privacy protections we offer,” the corporate spokesperson advised PTI.


Having sought to shift all of the blame for lynchings driven through faux information on the messenger provider, the federal government appears unwilling to simply accept that.


A senior ministry reliable advised TOI, “Tracing the supply of sinister campaigns — that result in incidents comparable to lynching, revenge porn — is important, and the federal government stands company on the call for that WhatsApp provide technical answers to spot the same.”


The reliable further added, “They want to continue to explore technical innovations wherein, in case of large-scale movement of provocative and nefarious messages that result in violence and crime, the starting place may also be ascertained.”
