SC to hear Tamil Nadu's plea against NGT order giving Vedanta limited access to Tuticorin plant

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear on August 17 the plea of Tamil Nadu govt difficult an order of the National Green Tribunal permitting mining primary Vedanta access to the administrative unit within its closed Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin within the state.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar regarded as the submission of the state govt and posted its plea for listening to on August 17.

The NGT had on August nine allowed Vedanta to go into its administrative unit within its Sterlite copper plant, staring at that no environmental injury could be led to by means of permitting access to the administrative section.

The tribunal, however, had said that the plant would remain closed and the corporate do not need access to its production unit and directed the district magistrate to verify this.

The Tamil Nadu govt had, on May 28, ordered the state pollution keep an eye on board to seal and "permanently" close the mining group's copper plant following violent protests over pollution considerations.

Sterlite's manufacturing facility had made headlines in March 2013 when a gas leak ended in the dying of one particular person and accidents to a number of others, and then then chief minister J Jayalalithaa had ordered its closure.


The corporate had then appealed to the NGT, which had overturned the federal government order. The state had then moved the Supreme Court against it and the case remains to be pending.
