Macau shuts down casinos for first time as storm approaches

HONG KONG: Macau shut down all its casinos in a historic first as Typhoon Mangkhut approached Sunday, with government caution the gambling enclave can be hit through serious flooding.

The Macau government was once closely criticised through residents last 12 months for failing to organize the town ahead of Typhoon Hato, which left standard damage and 12 other people lifeless.

A observation from government past due Saturday said the verdict to close Macau's 42 casinos was once authorized through the town chief and agreed through gaming bosses.

"The suspension of gaming operations is for the safety of casino employees, visitors to the city and residents," the federal government observation said.

Casino personnel informed AFP that venues can be shut till further notice as the town raised its second best typhoon caution.

Macau's climate bureau said the typhoon caution can be raised to the best T10 degree later Sunday with the worst rain and winds anticipated round midday local time (0400 GMT).

Shops and companies have been boarded up and secure through sandbags across the city and its streets, in most cases crowded with tourists, have been deserted.

Macau, a semi-autonomous southern Chinese city, had to turn to troops from mainland China's People's Liberation Army stationed within the enclave to lend a hand with the huge clear-up after Hato.

The city's climate leader resigned after the typhoon, which was once the worst to hit Macau in over 50 years, and the federal government was once pressured to apologise for failing to organize sufficiently upfront.
