JOHANNESBURG: The African Union drive in Somalia says it has killed a "chief finance controller'' for the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist crew.
The AU drive in a series of tweets on Thursday says the commander, the head of tax collection in Lower Shabelle area, used to be killed after an ambush on Monday on an al-Shabab meeting in Bariire. The extremists usher in investment by taxing the communities they control.
The AU drive says any other seven al-Shabab opponents had been killed on Sunday when their assault on a forward running bases used to be "botched.''
The multinational drive in the coming years is predicted to attract down and hand over duty for Somalia's security to the country's army.
Al-Shabab holds rural portions of southern and central Somalia and continues to target the capital with high-profile assaults.
