ABUJA: Boko Haram jihadists launched a big assault on an army base in Nigeria's faraway northeast area and killed one soldier, defence officers stated Sunday.
The assault on 145 Battalion in Gashigar, Borno State, started on Saturday and persevered into early Sunday morning, stated Nigerian air drive spokesman Ibikunle Daramola.
"BHTs (Boko Haram terrorists) in 13 gun trucks...advanced towards the camp from two different directions," Daramola stated in a commentary.
Nigerian troops supported through helicopters "forced the Boko Haram terrorists to retreat from the camp," Daramola stated.
"One soldier was killed in action while four others were wounded," stated the Nigerian army in a commentary posted on its reliable Twitter account.
The army repelled an assault on Gashigar in September through jihadists in trucks fixed with anti-aircraft guns.
There have been at least 9 military base attacks since July, most commonly in the northern part of Borno state, near the shores of Lake Chad.
Boko Haram has in recent months intensified attacks on military bases in Borno and within reach Yobe state, undermining repeated claims through the army that they have the higher hand.
Scores of soldiers have been killed, injured or missing in attacks but the military has time and again denied or performed down losses to the jihadists.
More than 27,000 folks have been killed in northeast Nigeria since the Boko Haram insurgency started in 2009, whilst nearly two million others stay homeless.
