How a 2-star Army general took charge of a broken city

PANAMA CITY (Fla): The man in charge of working Panama City's recovery from Hurricane Michael is a two-star Army common who began the task just two weeks sooner than the hurricane.

Mark McQueen is town manager for the Panhandle town. The 58-year-old used to be an atypical choice when commissioners picked him out of a candidate pool of 80 folks regardless of having no municipal experience.

But he is uniquely fitted to the recovery, having been the commanding common of the 108th Training Command headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, he commanded some 7,000 squaddies. One of their duties used to be to repair the infrastructure of Baghdad.

McQueen's first break day since the hurricane used to be Friday — his retirement ceremony from the military in Washington, D.C.
