Gang that dug up wires outside Parliament busted

NEW DELHI: A gang of thieves that stole telephone cables from Lutyens’ Delhi bungalows used to be busted and all 10 participants arrested on Wednesday. They have been caught within the act at a VIP bungalow close to Barakhamba Road.

The same gang had earlier dug up wires out of doors Parliament, affecting telephone lines at safety posts. The males have been identified as Manoj Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Satya Prakash, Manglu, Kishanpal, Arvind, Aalam Mashuri, Raj Kumar, Rahul Kumar and Anil. They would pose as MTNL workmen and excavate the wires. Several metres of twine used to be seized from them, which they might have melt for copper and sold them off.


Police were receiving lawsuits about stolen cables from the telephone company. DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma stated a patrol team close to Firoz Shah Road spotted them digging a pit at the back of a bush and confronted them. They claimed to be employees from the telephone division, but couldn’t produce any identification. They have been detained and interrogated during which they admitted to have stolen wires from somewhere else as smartly. They used to load the wires in an autorickshaw and force to a colony in south Delhi the place those could be melt and sold off.


Manoj and Ajay supervised the theft, others formed teams and went into pits that may be three or four ft deep. They would pull out the cables and lower them into small items and load them into an autorickshaw. The cash thus earned could be break up amongst them.


Police stated all of them have been addicted to medication and alcohol and spend all their cash on them.
