Govt to launch air pollution prediction system for Delhi on Oct 15

NEW DELHI: The Centre will on October 15 launch an air pollution prediction system for Delhi, making it more straightforward for presidency’s pollution watchdogs to alert stakeholders and normal public about air high quality 48 hours in advance. The move will give them good enough time to take precautionary measures.

The system - called Air Quality Early Warning System - may have an built in web-based dissemination gear to inform public and enforcement agencies about episodic prime pollution occasions in advance. Such knowledge is also helpful for normal public in making plans their outside actions.

The system is collectively advanced via the scientists of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, Noida and India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“The system, advanced under general coordination of ministry of earth sciences (MoES), will probably be handed over to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for dissemination of air high quality knowledge to all stakeholders and normal public throughout the web-based dissemination gear,” mentioned the IMD chief, Ok J Ramesh.

He told TOI that the CPCB would alert the government about emergency scenario (episodic prime pollution occasions), if any, in advance for taking precautionary measures on the floor.

The system will probably be launched via the Union minister of earth sciences, Harsh Vardhan. The facility will probably be expanded to the entire NCR and different towns sooner or later.

The system is devised via mapping of emissions (pollutants) from various assets and analysing high quality of meteorological fields in urban areas - be it native air circulation, topographic effect, low winds or breeze conditions in certain months.

It’ll draw data round the clock from the cutting-edge Air Quality and Weather Forecast System – SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research) and different monitoring stations of the CPCB and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

The alerts will help the government begin movements under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) which envisages specific steps for various levels of air high quality.

“Great to hear this. At least now after a year of GRAP being in drive, we will be able to take strict movements on polluting assets to avoid air pollution episodes in Delhi and NCR. The GRAP will probably be transformed from reactionary to precautionary now,” mentioned Sunil Dahiya, clean air campaigner of the Greenpeace India.
