Imelda Marcos convicted of graft, court orders her arrest

MANILA, Philippines: A Philippine court docket has found former first lady Imelda Marcos responsible of graft and ordered her arrest in a unprecedented conviction amongst many corruption instances that she's prone to appeal to keep away from prison and shedding her seat in Congress.


The anti-graft Sandiganbayan court docket sentenced the 89-year-old Marcos to serve 6 to 11 years in jail for each and every of the seven counts for violating an anti-corruption regulation when she illegally funneled about $200 million to Swiss foundations within the 1970s.


Neither Marcos nor someone representing her attended Friday's court docket listening to.


The court docket disqualified Marcos from holding public administrative center but she will be able to stay a member of the tough House of Representatives whilst interesting the decision.


Her husband, Ferdinand Marcos, used to be ousted by way of a "people power" rebel in 1986 and died in 1989.
