KOLKATA: Former West Indies skipper Carl Hooper has said it is a shame that the top players from the Caribbeans don't seem to be interested by playing for the rustic.
The T20 world champions, who are in India without the likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, suffered a five-wicket defeat within the opening match in opposition to India on the Eden Gardens on Sunday.
The players are lacking in action both on account of accidents or 'personal problems' within the wake of the long-standing feud with their cricket board.
"It's clear that they are not interested in playing for the West Indies. It's a shame," the cricketer-turned-commentator said at the sidelines of the primary T20I.
The Carlos Brathwaite-led West Indies staff featured 3 debutants, including Fabian Allen, within the match in opposition to India. Allen was their top-scorer (20-ball 27) in a vulnerable batting show as they posted 109/eight.
"It would not have been this easy for India if our seniors played. This is a young squad and they need time," the 51-year-old Hooper said backing the younger side.
The West Indies had been inconsistent this year, successful most effective two times from 8 matches.
In their ultimate collection held within the United States, the Windies lost 1-2 to Bangladesh in July-August.
Earlier this year, they suffered a Zero-Three drubbing in Pakistan prior to beating ICC World XI in a one-off T20I in England.
"We need to be consistent," Hooper, who performed 102 Tests between 1987 and 2002, said.
"Some days we are playing well, some days we are not performing according to the situation. We have the talent, but they need to be nurtured well. Cricket West Indies needs to adopt good policies," he added.
