Rights activist Agnes Kharshiing stable after undergoing surgery

SHILLONG: Renowned rights activist and Civil Society Women’s Organization president Agnes Kharshiing, who sustained grievous accidents in a murderous mob attack by means of suspected coal mafia in East Jaintia Hills on November 8, is recuperating in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) here after undergoing a a hit surgical operation on Wednesday.

On the other hand, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women has requested the state government to provide 24×7 police coverage to Amita, who is the high witness in the November 8 assault. Commission chairperson Theilin Phanbuh, in a letter to chief minister Conrad Ok Sangma, stated Amita, a widow from Tripura who lives in a rented accommodation in Madanrting at the outskirts of Shillong along with her minor youngsters, faces a threat to her life.


“Amita Sangma has no circle of relatives or kin in Shillong to enhance her. She has seven youngsters, the eldest son being 19 years simplest. Others are minors. Being the high witness and under threat of removal, Amita needs 24-hour police coverage and the whole circle of relatives needs to be shifted to a safe space,” Phanbuh wrote to the CM on Wednesday.


Condemning the attack on Amita and Agnes, Phanbuh requested the government to speed up the process of giving intervening time aid to the duo. The state government has already announced that it could bear the expenses for the treatment of the two activists.


The state government has ordered an independent inquiry into the assault at the two girls rights activists. Congress and Amita Sangma have demanded CBI probe into the case.
