2 babies die of gastro in Mumbai orphanage

MUMBAI: Two young children of Bal Anand Orphanage in Ghatla, Chembur, have died of acute gastroenteritis and dehydration and 4 others are undergoing remedy in sanatorium.
On December 25, six youngsters staying in the privately-run orphanage complained of dehydration and were rushed to nearby hospitals. The subsequent day, five-month-old Khushi died. Ten-month-old Jaydeep passed away on December 27.

“We received six youngsters suffering from acute gastroenteritis with dehydration. Of them, one baby passed away shortly after being brought to the sanatorium and every other child was transferred to every other sanatorium. The different young children are doing neatly and shall be discharged quickly,” stated Dr Roy Patankar, director, Zen Hospital.

Govandi police have registered a case of accidental dying and are awaiting the post-mortem record.

About 45 youngsters as much as 18 years of age keep in the orphanage. Madhavi Mhatre, the director, stated Baby Khushi was on milk and baby food and Jaydeep and different young children got khichdi cooked throughout the orphanage. “Many different youngsters ate the similar khichdi. When they felt in poor health, they were straight away taken to the sanatorium but sadly the 2 young children passed away,” stated Mhatre. She stated of the 4 others admitted, two were in ICU but have now been shifted to the general ward and are underneath remark.

“On December 25, six youngsters were admitted after a grievance of dehydration. Two died and 4 others are undergoing remedy at hospitals. Three are admitted in Zen sanatorium, Chembur, and one is at Kohinoor sanatorium, Kurla. All the children are below 12 months of age. At provide, no FIR has been registered and the subject is underneath investigation,” stated Govandi police senior inspector Shashikant Mane.


The police stated the post-mortem was conducted at JJ sanatorium on December 28 and the provisional reason for dying of Khushi is given as “opinion reserved pending histo-pathological exam” and that of Jaydeep is “evidence of consolidation of lungs with pleural effusion”. “In both the instances, tissues were preserved for histo-pathological exam.


The non-public orphanage was started in 1984 and runs on donation. “Both the young children that died were deserted via unwed mothers. They would were given up for adoption,” stated Mhatre.
