28 booked for diesel theft from tugboats

Rajkot: A complete of 28 folks were booked on Saturday for alleged diesel robbery from tugboats off Navlakhi port close to Maliya-Miyana in Morbi district.
The accused incorporated sailors of 16 tugboats, 10 fishermen and two brokers who used to sell stolen diesel.

“The rip-off was once busted when we received a tip-off about it. On attaining Navlakhi port we discovered 80 barrels containing 4,800 litre stolen diesel, value Rs 3.31 lakh, that have been saved on the market. The diesel was once stolen from the tugboats belonging to two leading shipping corporations. We knowledgeable the manager of probably the most corporations, Nitin Parmar, who lodged a grievance in this regard, resulting in filing of the case towards the accused,” mentioned J D Jhala, sub-inspector of Maliya-Miyana police station.


Talking concerning the modus operandi hired through the accused, Jhala mentioned that the shipping corporations used to fill the tanks of tugboats with diesel to their complete capability. The tugboats were assigned on contractual basis to bring coals to Navlakhi port from the ships anchored some 24 nautical miles off the coast.


“The accused would scouse borrow the diesel from their boats and sell it to fishermen for Rs 2,000 in line with 60 litre, which they might in turn then sell to two brokers for Rs 2,500 in line with 60 litre. The brokers would then sell it to farmers for Rs 3,000 in line with 60 litre,” explained Jhala.


Some of the accused were identified as Bhalchandra tugboat sailor Ashutosh Sinh, Ganpat tugboat sailor Brijesh Sinh, Bhim tugboat sailor Ranjit Bharat and Hanuman tugboat sailor Anand Sinh.
