AAI offers airport land to bail out New Garia-Airport Metro project

KOLKATA: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has introduced the New Garia-Airport Metro alignment back on the right track through providing land from the japanese outer edge of the airport for development of the proposed flyover on VIP Road, which had emerged as a major bottleneck for the challenge. The be offering has come as an enormous relief for Rail Vikash Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the executing company of the Metro challenge, and PWD, the company entrusted with the construction of the flyover.

To facilitate development of the flyover, the state executive had asked RVNL to take the Metro underground from City Centre II. The unique plan was to take the Metro viaduct 500 metres along an increased corridor on VIP Road after which take it underground for the general stretch in the airport space. The state executive reasoned that it was not conceivable to part with two of the six lanes of VIP Road, some of the busiest corridors in the town. The flyover planned through the state would attach VIP Road with Jessore Road via an increased corridor from Gate 1 on VIP Road with Gate 3 on Jessore Road.

The whole Metro challenge turned into uncertain with the Railway Board disagreeing to the trade, bringing up time and price overrun. The cost of creating an underground corridor is nearly 2.eight instances greater than an increased stretch. “We were concerned over the time overrun as neatly,” said a Railways legitimate. The cost of creating increased tracks is Rs 150 crore for each and every kilometre and Rs 350-Rs 400 crore for a kilometre of an underground corridor. The distance between City Centre II and the website of the proposed airport station is around four.9 km.

With each companies sticking to their stand, the state executive had approached the AAI looking for a solution. In a up to date assembly chaired through chief secretary Malay De, the issue was largely resolved after a discussion with AAI. It was decided that the state executive and Metro Rail would proportion the price of the land on a 1:1 ratio. Under the new working out, the flyover and two Metro alignments will run parallel to one another, said a state executive supply.

“We can now persist with our unique plan for the general four.9km stretch. The City Centre-Rabindra Tirtha-VIP Road stretch can be at the floor while the airport station can be below the bottom,” said an RVNL legitimate.
