Anglers revel in clear breakwater during country’s first-of-its-kind event

Mangaluru: Anglers, now not only from Karnataka and Kerala, however so far as West Asia and Portugal, got hooked with their fishing rods stretched out over the salty breakwater here to snatch the prize catch.
As many as 110 anglers from throughout India and in another country took part in the nation’s first ‘entice only catch and free up salt water fishing contest’ at the southern breakwater of New Mangalore Port Trust that got underway early on Saturday.

For 76-year-old Alfred Joao Fernandes from Portugal, angling in Mangaluru was reminiscent of his younger days when he enjoyed fishing in his motherland.

“In Lisbon, my native land, excess pollution has kept fish away from the achieve of anglers and small fishermen. The transparent waters and nice climate here make for a perfect angling carnival and I'm absolutely loving it,” he told STOI.

For Fernandes, the senior-most angler in the festival, being in Mangaluru was a digital déjà vu, courtesy the Portugese conquest in this city. He was overjoyed to grasp that a huge collection of other folks from the Catholic group here shared his surname.
