Coimbatore: 7 wild elephants seen crossing road

COIMBATORE: Seven wild elephants had been observed crossing Mettupalayam Road in Thoppampatti across a residential area known as T G K Nagar in the wee hours of Saturday, inflicting panic amongst a couple of people who noticed the spectacle. The elephants additionally reportedly entered a banana plantation and damaged some crops.

Forest division officials confirmed that at around 1 am on Saturday, seven wild elephants had been observed walking via a residential area and crossing Mettupalayam Road. However, they say the elephants had been chased away sooner than they might do any damage. "Wild elephants coming out of the forest area to move to another mountain or area in search of water and food is a common occurrence in villages located on the foothills of the Western Ghats," said district forest officer, Venkatesh. "Thoppampatti being on the foothills is always equipped with rangers and staff whose main jobs is to chase the elephants back into the forest area. Our staff managed to chase all the seven back without any incident," he said.


However, a couple of citizens of T G K Nagar said elephants had regularly started visiting their area just for the past few months, but it was once starting to threaten them. "The residents panicked stating that they could be in danger in case one of them returns home by road late in the night or steps out of our houses in the middle of the night for some emergency. They also think that the elephants may start attacking their houses. Though it is concrete, it could be damaged," said a forest division staff member. "However, we have not gotten farmer complaints regarding damaged banana plantations yet," he said.
