Govt negotiates with agencies to reduce transport cost

Thiruvananthapuram: The unscrupulous spending in city zoo right through the previous few years turns out to have after all stuck the attention of state executive as the government has made up our minds to reconsider the estimate prepared for transfer of animals from South Africa.
In a move obviously aimed toward chopping down the expenses and regulating the spending pattern in city zoo, where enclosures have come up at crores of rupees, the zoo government have begun negotiating with companies to deliver down the cost of transport. The challenge is much less likely to continue additional till the estimate is introduced right down to reasonable ranges, officers hinted.

The exact estimate was proposed at over Rs 5 crore, which didn't go down smartly with the state executive, and government were directed to reconsider the estimate.

TOI had previous carried a chain of stories showing how round 62 works were performed in city zoo between 2010 and 2018 spending quantity ranging between Rs 90 lakh and Rs 2 crore. While some of the new enclosures constructed at whopping quantity did not also have any exhibit to accommodate, some of the older enclosures had been found wanting of fast repairs.

The officers mentioned that a reasonable quantity might be drawn for the transport of animals from South Africa and that the challenge continues to be on.

The initial proposal mainly included cargo fees, cost for the agency and the like. Additional financial requirement was also deliberate to be sought from division of finance.

The zoo administration has reportedly awarded tenders to the song of Rs 90 lakh for revamping the enclosure of giraffes. The paintings has already begun. The quantity required for revamping the enclosures of white lion, zebras is but to be finalized.


As according to the proposal, 4 white lions, 4 giraffes, five zebras and two black jaguars might be brought to city zoo from South Africa.


The progress within the paintings of enclosures might be a very powerful in engaging the agency which shall be entrusted with the logistics of transport of animals from South Africa.


Clearances have already been received from central zoo authority, ministry of surroundings and forests, central animal husbandry division and director basic of overseas trade.
