Koregaon Bhima businessmen hope for usual day on January 1

KOREGAON BHIMA: Jehangir Shaikh Tamboli of Koregaon Bhima took a while to clear up his saree shop that was once broken all through the January 1 riots, but got back into trade.
“Except for Diwali, it's been a lifeless year. I can stay my shop open on January 1 in order that I can make some cash. Others may additionally stay their open,” the 45-year-old man said.

Thousands are expected to discuss with the Vijay Stambh (Victory Pillar) to commemorate the battle of Koregaon Bhima. But Tamboli is determined to conquer worry and stay open.

Inspector general of police (Kolhapur range) Vishwas Nangare-Patil informed TOI that the police have issued notices to the shopkeepers and hotel owners, located in conjunction with Pune-Ahmednagar highway, to stick open on January 1.

“They are responding neatly. Last year, that they had kept their shops, retail outlets and eateries shut which led to a few problems,” Nangare-Patil said.

Other shopkeepers and eatery owners from Vadhu Budruk, Sanaswadi, Koregaon Bhima and Perne Phata will even stay open despite the fact that many suffered damage in the violence on January 1, this year.

Tamboli and his staff have been having lunch when a mob collected in the entrance. ”They pelted stones earlier than I may shut the shop. Some attempted to set it ablaze. My signboard near the street was once burnt,” he said.

The mob had set ablaze many automobiles parked at the roadside garages in Sanaswadi. Sitting of their empty storage, Dilip and Sukumar Bhakta are fearful of mobs. “On January 1, they walked into our storage and torched the cars. It was once horrifying,” said Dilip. The brothers came to Pune from Howrah, West Bengal, six years ago.


Dilip and his brother Sukumar run the roadside storage to enhance their families. “Before January 1, there was once such a lot trade that we didn't have time to consume. Now, we don’t have shoppers. We won one automobile up to now few days for upkeep,” Sukumar said. Both brothers said they're going to stay open in the hope that some shoppers flip up.


Their neighbour Dawood Shaikh, who also owns a storage, said, “The entire storage was once torched by the mob that day. We resumed our trade after an opening of almost 3 months, but now shoppers aren't turning up.” Shaikh said he's going to stay his storage open on January 1.


Owner of an eatery at the Pune-Ahmednagar highway, Amit Bhorde, said, “I have won reimbursement from the federal government. Though I have faced a loss in trade on this year, I have determined to stay my eatery open on January 1.”
