Nel Jayaraman, who revived paddy seeds, dies

CHENNAI: Nel Jayaraman, who revived more than 160 conventional paddy seeds, died in a Chennai hospital on Thursday morning. He was suffering from cancer.

Doctors in Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital at Teynampet, where Jayaraman was undergoing treatment, said his situation became essential on Wednesday and he died at 5.19am on Thursday.

Jayaraman was 54 and is survived by spouse and a son.


Jayaraman started his adventure with organic guru G Nammalwar to restore the lost seeds in 2004. He may just to start with gather best 15 varieties.


He cultivated them in his village after which disbursed the similar to farmers in the first Nel Vizha (paddy seed competition) that he organised in his local village Adirangam in Tiruvarur district in 2006. The competition were given excellent response from farmers and agricultural professionals.


Jayaraman persevered his adventure in search of the lost paddy seeds and collected 169 seeds.


A few weeks ago, 51 rice lines from Jayaraman’s collection had been handed over to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to be preserved in a vault of the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) – an excellent recognition for a humble farmer like Jayaraman.
