MANGALURU: The BJP has in the end taken its battle against the proposed upgrading of the city’s lone abattoir at Kasba Bazar area of the city in Kudroli beneath the Smart City venture to the Centre. A delegation of Gou Samrakshana Prakoshta of the state unit of the BJP headed through Vinay L Shetty, co-convenor of the prakoshta, called on Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, minister of state for food processing industry, to resort their plaint against the proposed upgrading of the abattoir.
A memorandum submitted to Sadhvi Niranjan, copies of which have been circulated to the media in the community, steered her to direct the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to not modernise the present abattoir, however to build a new facility outside the city limits. Noting that the existing abattoir beneath the MCC is not in response to rules governing it, Vinay mentioned it flouts environmental regulations, and that there is also a large question mark over the standard of meat produced there.
Citing ‘expert’ opinion that it's not possible to modernise the abattoir at the moment location, surrounded through a residential area on one aspect and river at the different, he mentioned the MCC commissioner has repeatedly submitted affidavits to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board as well as the Supreme Court that the abattoir will be shifted to a location outside the MCC limits. The new facility will be housed on 5 acres at Pachchanady, it used to be stated in the affidavit, he mentioned.
