Campaign to save birds begins in Jaipur

JAIPUR: Animal rights activists have began a marketing campaign to avoid wasting the birds ahead of Makar Sankranti in Jaipur. With over two weeks left for the Makar Sankranti festival on January 14, chook casualties because of glass-coated manja (thread) used by kite-flyers, are being reported day by day.

About 50 birds this yr together with an eagle owl, kites, vultures, pigeons and others thus far have already arrived for treatment at the Hope Bird Shelter. Chairman of the refuge, Joy Gardner mentioned, “To teach volunteers and organisations about tips on how to rescue injured birds we're establishing a workshop in the town on huge scale between January 7-10, in affiliation with wooded area division. Volunteers from across the globe will take part in the workshop. Organisations that do not attend this workshop will not formally be allowed to rescue wild birds.”

Despite the federal government banning Chinese manja and different synthetic (non-biodegradable) threads lined with glass and metal, it's being rampantly sold available in the market. According to wooded area officers, no less than 3 to five chook deaths are reported on a daily basis. Sources mentioned fail to remember public awareness, even enforcement officers don't appear to grasp the dangers posed by the manja. Birds’ wings get stuck in it and whilst seeking to escape, they continuously get killed.
