“The delay is basically for 2 causes. First, we needed to come to a decision between a cable-stayed bridge and a bow string bridge and, second, we needed to have the approval for the Joka-Esplanade Metro from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL). We held several conferences with the railways and in spite of everything were given the approval. Only after that lets publish the design and the budget to the finance division. The approval got here soon after that,” a senior PWD professional said.
According to the brand new General Alignment Drawing tabled on December 19, the proposed width of the cablestayed bridge shall be nearly 23 metres, virtually 6 metres narrower than the unique plan of a bow string bridge. “In the brand new design, on the point where the gap is lowest between the Metro development and the collapsed bridge, there shall be a footpath on just one aspect and two traffic lanes whose width shall be decreased from 9.5m to 8m. The railways later wrote to the state executive, approving the brand new design,” the professional added.
The authentic plan drawn up through the general public works division had suggested a 29m width with 4 lanes. But the bridge would have then encroached upon the Majerhat Metro station.
Sources in the state secretariat said the demolition part was nearly over and the railways has began demolishing the portion of the collapsed bridge that is nonetheless standing over the Sealdah-Budge Budge tracks of Eastern Railway.
