Pool of cyber experts to help decode new-age crimes in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha police have determined to create a pool of cyber mavens and determine a cyber laboratory-cum-training centre to effectively deal with the IT-related offences. The dedicated cyber cops will assist police in different districts to crack cybercrimes. At provide, police stations, mostly in rural spaces, lack the expertise to crack cyber offences.
“Though we now have a cyber police station each in Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela towns, we will create a group of cyber mavens to effectively deal with cyber offences. This will ease the power at the current 4 cyber police stations. Advent of advanced era has given upward push to extra cybercrimes and posed a big challenge for the investigating officials, who wish to be skilled to handle such circumstances,” director common of police R P Sharma instructed TOI.

Sharma said a state-of-the-art cyber forensic laboratory-cum-training centre can also be set up to teach cops concerning the new-age virtual crimes and hone their skills to effectively probe the circumstances. Sharma said the cyber unit of Crime Branch (CB) in Cuttack successfully cracked many circumstances and arrested foreigners in reference to on-line lottery and gift frauds.


While the police registered a complete 824 cybercrime circumstances in Odisha in 2017, they've registered 752 circumstances till November, 2018. The CB also plans to appoint an IT knowledgeable to help the officials resolve cybercrimes. The CB said help of an IT knowledgeable is essential in view of latest technologies used by cyber crooks to dedicate offences.


“We have steadily been setting up practicing programmes for workforce of police stations to help them be informed skills to probe cyber offences. But permanent presence of an IT knowledgeable with us will probably be a big advantage. The knowledgeable can help the probing officials to proceed in investigation and acquire virtual proof,” said additional director common of police (CB) Santosh Upadhyay.


Against the backdrop of misuse of social media towards ladies, the state government has also geared up to put in force a Centre-sponsored project, christened cybercrime prevention towards ladies and kids (CCPWC).
