SC seeks WB govt's response on BJP plea seeking permission for Rath Yatra

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Tuesday sought a response from the West Bengal government on a plea by way of BJP in search of permission to take out Rath Yatra in the state.

The West Bengal unit of the BJP has challenged the order of the department bench of the Calcutta High Court, which had disallowed the Rath Yatra.

An apex court bench headed by way of Justice S K Kaul also requested the BJP state unit to publish a revised plan for its "Save Democracy" rally for attention by way of the state government.


According to BJP's new plan, four yatras would be taken out in Bahrampur, Diamond Harbour, Midnapore and Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituencies, between January 16 and 20.


West Bengal government denied permission to the yatras citing intelligence reviews of attempts to disturb communal team spirit alongside yatra routes. But the state BJP termed the reviews as bogus and moved Supreme Court in opposition to the Calcutta HC order.


The Supreme Court has fastened the next date of listening to as January 15.
