‘Serial offender’ gets 10 years for knife attack

MUMBAI: An alleged serial wrongdoer who has 13 cases registered in opposition to him was handed his first conviction on Wednesday. A periods courtroom sentenced Manigandan Harijan (28) to 10 years’ imprisonment for attacking an autorickshaw driving force with a knife in extensive daylight in Santacruz (West) in 2015 after refusing to pay the Rs118 fare. He was nabbed almost four months later after police acted on a tip-off.
Judge R M Sadrani found the accused in charge beneath Indian Penal Code segment 397 (theft, or dacoity, with attempt to purpose death or grievous hurt).

All cases in opposition to the accused had been registered at Santacruz police station. The offences come with robbery, molestation and theft. The accused had been externed two times.

The victim, Ashok Yadav (29), instructed courtroom that at 4pm on November 23, 2015, Manigandan and any other man boarded the automobile in Dharavi and mentioned that they sought after to go to Vakola, Santacruz (East). Yadav mentioned that en path, they mentioned they sought after to head to Santacruz (West). He mentioned that the 2 have been drinking beer all the way through the journey.

Yadav mentioned that after they alighted, he demanded the fare, but Manigandan began abusing him. He stated that pulling him by the collar, the accused dragged him out of the automobile.

Yadav mentioned Manigandan then took out a knife and held it in opposition to his neck.

“There was a scuffle. I fled from the spot. I shouted for assist, but no one got here ahead,” Yadav mentioned.


He alleged that the accused instructed him that he was the local ‘dada’ and other people gave him ‘hafta’. Yadav mentioned that the accused grabbed Rs 1,200 from his blouse pocket and hit him on his left arm with the knife. He stated that when a motorcyclist, later identified as a pupil, Saif Khan (20), attempted to assist, the accused and his friend started to pelt stones at him, forcing him to escape.


Yadav mentioned that the accused then left the spot, after which Khan returned and enquired about the assault.


Yadav then went to Santacruz police station and an FIR was filed. He was referred to Bhabha Hospital, where he was treated for his accidents. Yadav identified the accused in courtroom. Khan too deposed and identified the accused.
