‘Tamil Nadu should focus on medical textiles’

There is huge possible in technical textiles, particularly cotton-based medical textiles, and Tamil Nadu will have to look for techniques to tap it, Union minister for textiles Smriti Irani said.
Speaking at the inaugural of the ‘Tex TN Global Textile Expo -2019’ and the ‘Ind Texpo 2019’ she said the Centre had not too long ago ensured that Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) Codes have been notified for 207 technical textile pieces. “This would be sure that the expansion of the field.”

“Cotton-based medical textiles have a surging possible. Now that the standardisation has been notified, we will turn out to be probably the most aggressive economies within the field. Tamil Nadu will have to look at this untapped possible. If explored correctly, the medical textile market could develop to $3billion in two to three years. As through 2022 the Tirupur textile industry is eyeing to take its income to Rs 1lakh crore, cotton medical textiles could pave the way in which,” she added.

Medical textiles encompass material from gauze and bandage fabrics to apparel worn through docs and paramedics in operation theatres.

Manufacturers of medical textiles, who had arrange stalls at the expo, said the healthcare sector was once but to get up to using medical textiles. Nainar Mohamed, technical director of the Tirupur-based Viswamri Special Finished Hosptial and Institution Uniforms, who specialise in medical textiles, said whilst that they had controlled to produce marketable medical textiles, docs have been but to heat as much as them. “We produce each cotton and polyester-based surgical aprons, which have anti-microbial, blood repellent and water repellent houses, amongst others. But, the medical community is but to recognise the usage.”

“The material could resist no less than 20 washes. The cost of a surgical apron made the usage of medical textile material is Rs 1,400 compared to the ones made the usage of customary material, which prices Rs 100. But customary aprons are disposed after a surgical procedure. So through the usage of an apron made from medical textile material for 20 washes, docs can save Rs 600 from purchasing 20 customary aprons,” Mohamed said. TNN
