TN min Balakrishna sentenced to 3-yr imprisonment

CHENNAI: In a setback to the ruling AIADMK govt in Tamil Nadu, a special court docket for cases in opposition to MLAs and MPs on Monday convicted Tamil Nadu sports minister P Balakrishna Reddy in reference to a 1998 case for damaging public homes and has sentenced him to undergo 3 years of imprisonment.


In view of the conviction, the minister stands mechanically disqualified of being an MLA as consistent with the provisions governing statutory disqualification of the Representation of People Act.


However, permitting a memo moved by means of Reddy, trial pass judgement on J Santhi suspended the sentence enabling him to favor appeal within the Madras high court docket.


The factor relates to a case registered in 1998 underneath the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of wear and loss) Act for allegedly pelting govt buses with stones and damaging them all the way through a rally in opposition to illicit liquor in Hosur. Reddy was once a member of the BJP then.
