Varanasi: UP’s annual Budget for 2019-20 has equipped Rs 150 crore for preliminary work on Metro rail projects for Varanasi, Meerut, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj and Jhansi.
However, mavens listed below are unsure whether or not town’s proportion in Rs 150 crore fund is for Metro rail or Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS), for which some preliminary work has already been carried out.
The Metro rail venture for Varanasi, which was once ready by means of Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) 2016, was once put on the backburner in view of practical problems in 2018, just a year after formation of BJP executive within the state.
In its position, VDA had requested RITES to arrange a comprehensive mobility plan for town under MRTS by means of incorporating various modes of transportation.

In 2015, then leader minister Akhilesh Yadav had introduced Metro rail projects for Varanasi and Kanpur. As consistent with VDA records, in January 2015 the state executive requested RITES to arrange a feasibility report and DPR.
In the initial DPR, RITES had proposed two Metro rail corridors in Varanasi by means of estimating time completion of venture by means of March 2023, and likewise the price as over Rs 17,702 crore. The VDA paid about Rs 3 crore to RITES for preparing DPR. The state executive licensed it on June eight, 2016.
Later, the DPR was once forwarded to the Union ministry of city construction on August 29, 2016 for its approval. However, the ministry raised questions on the business viability of the venture, especially introduction of the provider in outdated city spaces.
