CHENNAI: Residents of 14 villages in and round Vayalur and a number of other hundred families in the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) township can heave a sigh of aid as their decades-old demand for a test dam across the Palar in the neighborhood will soon be fulfilled.
The Rs 32.50 crore dam, designed to prevent intrusion of sea water, shall be built at Vayalur, about 1.5km from the beach, and the challenge is totally funded by way of the Department of Atomic Energy’s common provider organisation (GEO). Authorities mentioned the 1,200m-long dam is the primary to be built across the Palar in 161 years since the Anaicut was built across the river in Thirumalaichery village, Vellore district.
GEO inked an MoU with the PWD to fund the challenge after IIT-Madras licensed the design developed by way of the PWD.
“The construction will hang water as much as 9km alongside the riverbed (upstream) and five.5km across the river. It will augment groundwater and spice up aquifers, but even so rejuvenating water bodies and farm wells in the neighborhood,” collector P Ponnaiya mentioned on the programme’s inauguration.
To scale back TN’s dependence on neighbouring states for water, the government has implemented schemes akin to Kudimaramathu programmes to rejuvenate water bodies, mentioned minister for regulation, courtroom and prisons C Ve Shanmugam. Shanmugam, minister P Benjamin and IGCAR director Arun Kumar Badhuri laid the basis stone for the challenge.
“We will make a milestone-based fund switch for the challenge. Initially, we can release 10% of the total quantity,” Badhuri mentioned, urging government to complete the challenge prior to the monsoon. The township which calls for 6 million gallons of water, receives slightly part the volume.
The government has planned to build six more test dams across the Palar at Venkatapuram, Vengudi, Ullavur, Pazhaveli and Esur-Vallipuram in Kancheepuram district, a PWD reliable mentioned. The plan also covers the conversion of a subsurface dyke into a test dam.
