WB fund to help settle 38,000 slum families

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government will resettle and supply housing to 38,000 families dwelling along the Buckingham canal at a price of four,647.50 crore, stated deputy leader minister and finance minister O Panneerselvam whilst presenting the state finances in the meeting on Friday.

The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) had already known around 71,000 families dwelling along the Adayar river, the Buckingham canal and the Cooum river. Around 13,000 homes have been evacuated and resettled. “Construction of those 38,000 tenements will start in April,” stated an engineer in the TNSCB.

With World Bank assistance, Tamil Nadu Housing and Habitat Development for Urban Poor programme shall be introduced in Chennai and surrounding spaces for poor families dwelling at river margins.

“A memorandum of working out with the World Bank had already been signed via central government. Funds shall be allotted soon. We require 5 to seven acres of land for the mission. We are identifying land parcels from various departments. We are also running with other agencies similar to corporation, HR and CE, highways and other agencies to search out land parcels for those initiatives,” stated an legit.
