THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leaders have come out in opposition to the allegation of CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan that the Congress is in a tacit understanding with BJP for a quid pro quo deal in this Lok Sabha poll. KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran, opposition chief Ramesh Chennithala and former CM Oommen Chandy termed the allegation baseless and stemmed from CPM’s concern of defeat.
“It used to be the CPM which had engaged with Sangh Parivar forces on a number of events. They did it in 1977 when elections have been held after the Emergency. At that time the front led by Congress and comprising CPI had a thumping win. In 1989, BJP and Left parties in combination supported V P Singh govt. They met every week to speak about the policies of the government. In 2007, the BJP and Left voted in combination in opposition to UPA govt in parliament,” Chandy told a news conference right here. He stated the CPM doesn’t need to talk about the failure of state govt or politics of violence.
Ramachandran stated the allegation of Congress-League-BJP alliance used to be the closing weapon in CPM’s armoury. “The CPM is surprised by the record of candidates now we have announced. They have mentioned five seats and the UDF will win they all,” the KPCC leader stated. He stated the actual understanding used to be between CPM and BJP. “The dilly-dallying of CBI within the SNC-Lavalin case is a clear evidence. Despite the judges’ demand, the CBI used to be unwilling to argue the case. They didn’t enforce the order to arrest SNC-Lavalin vice-president even six years after court ordering the same,” he stated.
