CHENNAI: A Sriperumbudur resident’s choice to look into the septic tank at his area resulted in a sad turn of occasions that ended in six people, including the person and his two sons, falling useless in mins after inhaling a mixture of toxic gases on Tuesday.

Police stated V Krishnamurthy, 53, who runs a grocery in front of his area at Chella Perumal Nagar, had engaged a truck to pump out sewage from a 12-foot-deep septic tank. While looking ahead to the truck that had left with a full load to return, Krishnamurthy decided to test the quantum of sewage left within the tank. As his spouse, Latha, 50, watched from a brief distance, he peered down in the course of the small opening only to swoon and fall in. His spouse raised the alarm and her elder son, Kannan, 23, who used to be on the store, rushed to the rescue. But he too swooned and fell into the tank the moment he peered in to test where his father used to be. The lady’s cries drew her more youthful son, Karthik, 21, from their area and he too suffered the similar fate.



Hearing Latha’s screams, M Lakshmipathi, 21, of Arani, a customer who had come to the shop, rushed to assist. He took off his shirt, aiming to go into the septic tank, but as soon as he regarded in the course of the manhole opening, he too swooned.


Fresh water used to be pumped into sump


By then two tenants from the neighbourhood Surata Bai, 30, native of Odisha, and V Paramasivam, 31, of Sriperumbudur — rushed to the scene. But they too suffered the similar fate, falling unconscious into the septic tank the moment they peered in. Neighbours then informed police and hearth and rescue workforce. A fireplace officer stated, “We pumped in fresh water into the sewage sump and waited for no less than 10 to 15 mins for the gasoline trapped inside of to expend.” Fire workforce then got into the sump and pulled out the bodies.


Latha, who had watched helplessly because the tragedy opened up, blamed herself for her children’s demise.


Kancheepuram district SP Santhosh Haidmeni and assistant superintendent of police Rajesh Khanna rushed to the spot and held an inquiry. Khanna stated, “The victims did not realise there can be noxious gasoline formation inside the empty portions of the sump.”


The bodies have been sent to the federal government clinic in Sriperumbudur for an post-mortem. The Sriperumbudur police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
