THANE: Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal ordered an insurance corporate to pay Rs 12.8 lakh to the family of a priest who was knocked down by way of a truck close to Kalyan in 2017.
MACT member and district judge R N Rokade directed United India Insurance Co Ltd to make the cost and recover it later from the truck proprietor, Sudhakar Khilari, of Junnar, Pune, towards whom the order was handed ex parte as he did not appear regardless of notices.
Three members of the family of Uday Joshi, then 32, had pleaded that the untimely demise of the earning member had cast a shadow of gloom and sought compensation. The prison staff advised the tribunal that on October 7, 2017, at 12.30am, he was driving a motorbike on the Kalyan-Murbad street, in Varap village, when the truck collided. He fell, sustained a couple of injuries, and died. They mentioned the accident was because of the motive force's negligence.
