More farm loans will be waived once state's fiscal condition improves: Amarinder Singh

CHANDIGARH: As his government marks the finishing touch of two years in power, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Saturday mentioned more farm loans can be waived as soon as the state's fiscal state of affairs improves.

He attacked the Akalis for criticising his government's farm debt waiver scheme, accusing them of "failing" to do anything else for the farmers themselves.

Addressing a press conference to mark two years of his government, the CM mentioned, "If money is available, more will be given to the farmers, who deserve the same for the contributions they make for the prosperity of the nation."

Under the present farm debt waiver scheme, the state government had dedicated to waive farm loans of 10.25 lakh farmers.

Asserting that his government had laid a strong foundation for the development of Punjab in just two years, Amarinder mentioned the Congress regime had delivered on each and every of the nine 'nuktas' (promises) made within the run-up to the assembly elections.

Even the promise of smartphones to youths was being fulfilled, with tenders already being floated, he mentioned.

Listing out the achievements of the Congress government, Amarinder mentioned the state was on the proper path and was all set to leverage the renewed sense of optimism in key sectors.

Elaborating on the steps taken to battle the issue of substances, Amarinder mentioned his government had constituted a Special Task Force (STF) quickly after taking rate in 2016.

"So far, 21,985 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act and 26,088 persons arrested," the executive minister mentioned.

More than 552 kg of heroin have been recovered amongst other contraband substances, he added.

He mentioned more than five.76 lakh youths have been facilitated to get jobs within the personal and government sectors or via self-employment below the 'Ghar Ghar Rozgar and Karobar Yojana', at a mean of 808 jobs according to day.


He mentioned the state government was dedicated to making sure no adolescence was jobless within the state and their target was to lift the average to 1,000 jobs according to day.


Later, the executive minister hailed the good fortune of the farm debt relief scheme below which, he claimed, five.83 lakh small and marginal farmers have been supplied debt relief of Rs four,736 crore so far.


As and when the monetary position improves further, the state government would extend the advantage of this scheme particularly to important cases, he mentioned.


"We are doing our best to provide assistance but unless the central government implements the Swaminathan Commission Report in full, the woes of the farming community cannot be alleviated," he mentioned.
