'Need strategy to check drug, liquor smuggling'

BATHINDA: There is an crucial need to care for crossborder smuggling of drugs and liquor and expand a coordinated method to counter it, said officials on the coordination meeting of IGPs from north Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. They agreed that drug and liquor smuggling, excluding tackling organised crime, is the largest problem for the police of three north Indian states.

Inspector General of Bikaner in Rajasthan B L Meena stated consignments of addiction forming medicine, opium and heroin achieve Punjab from Rajasthan and liquor from Punjab and Haryana is smuggled to the dry state of Gujarat by way of Rajasthan and it could be successfully tackled with whole coordination. He also admitted that Hindu Mal Kot house in Rajasthan on Punjab border has become a transit level, from the place Pakistan based smugglers stay trying to smuggle medicine into Rajasthan and Punjab.

A joint strategy used to be devised in the interstate meeting to successfully take on the risk of drug smuggling and organised criminals by sharing knowledge up to SHO and sub divisional stage. It used to be determined to hold interstate meeting after 3 months for better coordination and sharing comments.


Apart from drug smuggling from Rajasthan, liquor smuggling from Haryana to Punjab is rampant. The Bathinda police have registered 709 instances underneath NDPS Act and arrested 980 persons. Police have registered 1,129 instances underneath Excise Act and arrested 1,161 persons from January 1, 2018 to March 5, 2019. A lot of those NDPS instances are of smuggling from Rajasthan and excise act of liquor smuggling from Haryana.


Inspector General Hisar in Haryana Amitabh Singh Dhillon stated the Haryana police have shared knowledge with Punjab opposite numbers about liquor smuggling to Punjab. The meeting used to be attended by Bathinda Range IG MF Farooqui, Ferozepur Range IG MS Chhina excluding IGs from Bikaner and Hissar.


Bathinda Range determined to position up CCTV digital camera especialy on the border house nakas with Haryana and Rajasthan while Ferozepur Range determined to arrange 30 nakas on borders to forestall smuggling.


Meena told IdealNews that Rajasthan police has detected that addiction forming medicine are smuggled from Agra and Delhi while heroin, opium are smuggled from Mandsaur in MP and Chittorgarh house in Rajasthan.
