Over 100 societies install waste converters

Surat: Owners of several small residential societies in the town have put in organic waste converters of their premises to recycle waste at supply. This comes soon after set up of huge organic waste converters (OWCs) through Surat Municipal Corporation at vegetable markets, grain markets and fruit markets. Residential societies have won 100 per cent subsidy on OWCs from the civic frame.

Around 15 lakh families in the town generate just about 1,800 metric tonne of waste day by day, of which 950 MT is organic waste. If even 60 per cent of organic waste is reprocessed at supply, the issue of waste disposal can be over to a big extent. At provide, just 36 MT of organic waste is processed at supply in the town.


SMC launched a scheme two years in the past to give 100 per cent subsidy on OWC for residential societies constructed on not up to five,000 square metres of land. Initially, there was reluctance at the a part of housing societies for residents concept OWC would create foul odor and be a headache to run it.
