This forum strives to bring ‘dead lake’ back to life

Coimbatore: While the tanks and water-bodies within the south of town have a doubtlessly perennial water flow due to the presence of Noyyal, the lone water frame within the north, Chinnavedampatti Lake, is in large part dependent on rainfall. In the hot years the channels that fed the lake had been in a state of disarray, causing it to stay dry.
A bunch of volunteers have taken up the task of reviving the 165acre lake which is important to the groundwater recharge within the northern areas of town. They formed the discussion board ‘Chinnavedampatti Lake Restoration Association’ and thru it they have got desilted and cleaned the 8km ‘Raaja Vaaikkal’, the channel which feeds the lake.

As on Sunday, members of the discussion board have also planted round 350 saplings at the space around the lake to improve it and to attract birds to develop its biodiversity. Organizers stated they have been making plans to plant 150 more bushes.

Coordinator of the affiliation S Sivaraja stated they have got included fruit-bearing bushes comparable to fig, jamun and ‘seeni puli’ to attract birds. Around 84 hen species have recognized to seek advice from the lake, he stated. “We have hung water pots within the existing bushes and saved water troughs for birds,” he stated. The discussion board has also taken up planting vetiver within the feeder channels to forestall soil erosion and weeds.

Another initiative to preserve the lake is to form a ‘live-fence’ or ‘uyir vaeli’ for the lake, Sivaraja stated. “The thought is unique to this area. It involves planting shrubs and bushes round a space as a fencing. While it is often achieved for fields, we have began environment it up for the lake. The fence could be for round 2.5km,” he stated.

The Chinnavedampatti Lake used to be artificially created to satiate water needs for farming and to recharge the groundwater level within the area, Sivaraja stated. While within the last year’s rain, water had reached until Kanuvai check-dam, it didn’t achieve the lake, he stated. “While the lake had water until 1993, after that it has remained dry. The lake would recharge groundwater to 25km,” he stated.

The discussion board may be within the process of getting ready a draft document for holding the waterways within the area and the Chinnavedampatti Lake and post it to the state, he stated.
