TN: 2 DMK workers, biryani shop employee scuffle

CHENNAI: Two males from the DMK allegedly attacked the manager of a biryani eating place in Velachery on Sunday when their demand totally free food was turned down. This comes nearly seven months after birthday celebration president M Okay Stalin had to make an apology for a similar incident that took place in a biryani joint in Saligramam.
Police said, Meganathan and Thamizhselvan, the DMK workers from Chennai, entered the eating place round 8pm. They ordered for hen when the manager, Abdullah, requested them to pay, collect the token and get the food. This angered the 2 males and they began arguing with Abdullah who cancelled the order.

The two males punched Abdullah at the face, who retaliated and attacked the duo. Two different workers of the eating place attempted pacifying them, and then they fled the spot. Later, Abdullah lodged a grievance with the Velachery police.

Police registered a case of extortion and assault in opposition to the birthday celebration workers. The two males later approached the police and said they were also attacked by the manager. “Both parties attacked each different and we now have registered a case in opposition to both the complainants. We are investigating further,” said an investigating officer.

Police said Meganathan holds a publish in the DMK formative years wing. Both suffered accidents in the assault.

This is not the first time DMK workers got into a scuffle over food. In August 2018, the Virugambakkam police arrested seven males, including DMK workers Okay L Yuvaraj and Diwakar, for assaulting the team of workers of R R Anbu Biryani in Saligramam. The two birthday celebration workers were later suspended.

The CCTV digicam footage of the incident showed the group beating up a hotel team of workers after their demand totally free biryani for 30 DMK workers, who were ready at the Kauvery health center when M Karunanidhi was admitted, was turned down. They also ransacked the eatery. Three people were injured in the incident. The video of the incident had gone viral on social media.


When DMK formative years wing contributors Yuvaraj and Diwakar demanded free biryani, the eating place’s manager Prakash, who was at the cashier’s desk, instructed them that the shop had closed for the day and there was no food available.


Later DMK president Stalin visited the eating place and spoke to the landlord and workers who were attacked by the birthday celebration contributors. He also tweeted an apology, condemning the incident. He promised strict action in opposition to the birthday celebration workers.


In a separate incident, in December 2018, a city-based journalist was injured when he was assaulted by a man close to Raj Bhavan. Pramod Madhav, who was protecting the protest organised by MDMK founder Vaiko, was allegedly attacked close to the protest website online by Suresh Babu, a driver. Babu allegedly punched Madhav while he was capturing a video of him purportedly choosing up a struggle with a tea stall proprietor when he was requested to pay the food he consumed.
