Tourism minister asks South Western Railway to halt renovation of city station

MYSURU: Tourism minister SR Mahesh was anything however proud of the continuing renovation on the Mysuru City Railway Station, charging the railway officials with tampering with the integrity of a heritage structure.

Ordering officials of the Mysuru department of South Western Railway (SWR) to prevent the renovation challenge on the station, Mahesh, who spent an hour on the terminus, said that the building had lost its innate attractiveness. “The railway authorities are chipping away on the authentic beauty of the station. The station is a heritage structure. They have replaced the old fencing with an iron one, which has taken the sheen off of its heritage look,” Mahesh instructed TOI.

The tourism minister was further miffed with the decision of the SWR authorities to relocate the two pillars that beautify the entrance to the station. “I'm instructed that both the Mysuru deputy commissioner, and the commissioner of the heritage committee authorized this transfer. But, in developing the new building, the heritage price of the station has been lost. They can retain and give a boost to the building, however they must not take up construction of recent structures,” Mahesh added.

He said that he had directed the senior officials in the SWR’s Mysuru department to halt all ongoing renovation paintings on the terminus, and to check with the DC and heritage panel chief ahead of going ahead with this sort of initiatives.

SWR Mysuru department supervisor Aparna Garg and other senior railway officials have been among those who accompanied Mahesh right through his inspection.
