Unhappy with working of PPCB, NGT's monitoring committee warns officials to face action

JALANDHAR: Expressing dissatisfaction on the running of Punjab Pollution Control Board, the NGT appointed tracking committee chairman Justice Pritam Pal (retd) on Wednesday said that the officers failing to check pollution in water channels would be taken to task and penal motion would even be initiated towards them. Justice Pal made these remarks after seeing the black water flowing through Kala Sanghia drain and foul smell emanating from it.

He and different contributors of the committee together with former Punjab leader secretary SC Aggarwal, PPCB member Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal and former PPCB secretary Babu Ram also met citizens of villages along the drain at Gurudwara Tahli Sahib at village Baler Khanpur together with the relatives of the ones affected by cancer. He expressed surprise on the scenario while chatting with media individuals later at Sultanpur Lodhi.

He said that one month time had been given to the PPCB officers, their running and effects would be monitored after a month. “Officials of any division answerable for pollution in water channels would be going through tough motion and penal motion would be initiated towards them. What will also be worse than the fact that people are not getting blank water or air,” he said.

He later also noticed the treatment of waste water and utilization of handled water for irrigation at village Seechewal.
