WB: Dust-absorbing plants to fight pollution

KOLKATA: In an effort to minimise filth pollution in New Town, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has given a list of dust-absorbing crops and timber to the wooded area department to plant earlier than the approaching monsoon.

The government also are involved with a German company to put in a ‘Fine Dust Eater’ machine, which is an eight-feet stationary tower that absorbs fine filth from air.



Officials said the government had been looking to eliminate filth and air pollution through sowing special crops.

The NKDA has already submitted a list of 21 other timber and saplings, over 3,000 in quantity, that may thought to be just right for pollution absorption.

The checklist include timber, like shirish, bel, jhau, bakul, kadam, palas and neem. While a few of them are suitable to be planted through the roads, others will probably be planted in parks and gardens. Officials said the timber must be planted with a mixture of two or 3 varieties on other avenues.

Sources said the soil blend for planting such timber must have coco peat, paddy husk and sand.

The ‘Fine Dust Eater’ machine, assisted with German technology, will probably be put in in New Town Action Area 1 on an experimental foundation after the elections.

Part of a pilot challenge, the machine is an eight-foot, three-cube stationary tower that may remove the fine filth from air with the assistance of the cubes. The machine consists of special filters, IoT units and rain sensors.


The NKDA have additionally been making plans to put in sensor-based air quality tracking units in several points of New Town for some time.
