UP: EC for vigil on social media during polls

LUCKNOW: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday sought setting up of media centres in all districts in the state to monitor social media content ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The issue came up all over a high-level assembly of ECI officers led by Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora with senior administrative and police officers in Lucknow to check poll preparedness.


CEC Sunil Arora, election commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra, are on a three-day talk over with to the state capital to check poll arrangements. They met senior administrative and police officers on Thursday.


Sources aware of the assembly advised IdealNews that the matter was raised by senior police officers suggesting a wish to keep a tab on social media content all over election marketing campaign and on polling day. The commission, however, said that social media must be monitored to check anti-social elements aiming to disturb peace all over polling. It also wired on deployment of social teams, NGOs and outstanding other people to make sure unity.


CEC Arora said that citizens must be told that they can use helpline number 1950 in case they face any drawback in polling. The CEC also advised officers to make sure loose and truthful polling in the state and to inspect and check the citizens’ list in advance. The commission also said that all polling centres must have ramps to permit the physically challenged citizens to exercise their franchise.


The commission also directed officers to take steps to extend poll proportion thru exposure vehicles and by establishing nukkad nataks and sabhas in every constituency.
