BJD's MLA candidate Bed Prakash Agarwalla dies, EC countermands polls in Patkura seat

BHUBANESWAR/KENDRAPADA: Veteran chief of BJD and its candidate for the Patkura assembly section, Bed Prakash Agarwalla, died here at a personal medical institution on Saturday. He was 82.

With his dying, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has countermanded the polls within the Patkura assembly section, which was scheduled to vote within the fourth phase on April 29. Polling for the Kendrapada Lok Sabha seat, underneath which Patkura falls, shall be held as per schedule on April 29, respectable assets said.


Agarwalla — a six-time MLA — was affected by age-related diseases for the previous two months and had been put on ventilator reinforce a couple of days ago. He is survived by his spouse, two daughters and a son.

Agarwalla began his political career as a municipal councillor in Kendrapada in 1957 and held that put up till 1970. He was chairman of the Kendrapada municipality from 1970 to 1974. He was first elected to the assembly from the Kendrapada seat as an Utkal Congress candidate in 1974. He was elected once more from the seat in 1977, 1990 and 2000. Agarwalla has represented Patkura since 2009.


As a minister underneath different governments, Agarwalla has held key portfolios reminiscent of finance, rural development, tourism and culture, parliamentary affairs, meals provides and client welfare and commerce and delivery.
