EVMs face a rat risk in UP's Ghazipur

VARANASI: Poll officers are facing a problem from unexpected quarters in Ghazipur, where BSP candidate Afzal Ansari (elder brother of jailed don-turned-MLA Mukhtar Ansari) is hoping to overthrow Union minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha.

A rodent invasion has just lately been detected at Navin Mandi Sthal, the complex of six halls that can house EVMs after the May 19 polling in the constituency. The counting is scheduled on May 23.

District election officer Okay Balaji conceded intensive damages to all the flooring and partitions. Some of the halls, he recalled, resembled “a ploughed field”. When grilled, Mandi officers admitted prior to the poll officer that the warehouse had long been grappling with rat menace.

“I summoned PWD officers and directed rapid damage keep an eye on. The holes are actually being plugged with cement-concrete and an company is being roped in for chemical treatment of the halls,” Balaji instructed IdealNews on Friday. He added that he would in my view observe progress of the work every day.

About preparations for polling in the final section, Balaji said submitting of nominations would start from April 22 and proceed until 28.
