In North Goa, ‘nice guy’ Shripad is the favourite, but buzz is all about bypolls

PANAJI: As the road winds up to the guts of the constituency, nestled on the northern end of Goa, it gets louder at each turn. It’s Easter and Mandrem is humming moderately early.

There are the usual foreigners driving round in modified motorcycles, wearing the naked minimum to beat the summer warmth. The locals zip round in automobiles, taking part in hip hop song, however it’s a Konkani song that catches your rapid consideration. This is election time in this a part of the world.

The BJP marketing campaign automobile is taking part in Konkani song, obviously focused on the 4,500-odd Catholic voters. That it’s Easter Sunday isn’t misplaced on somebody. Just across the street, Goa Suraksha Manch is having its assembly, clad in so much of saffron that it’s tough to inform the variation between them and BJP.

Elsewhere, Congress is staying involved with its core political base and Jit Arolkar, the impartial candidate who's attracting consideration here together with his candle marches, is rushing across the constituency in what he maintains is “last-minute international relations”.

There is so much taking place here, yet the person who most certainly issues essentially the most, is calm as a millpond. Even the lone policeman on accountability is moderately at ease, opening the doorways of the gate to his new residence, with no fuss. About 200m away is Laxmikant Parsekar. Not the Parsekar you’ve known as the previous leader minister. This gentleman is in his shorts and an off-the-cuff t-shirt. He obviously finds himself at home here, and given the vast smile on his face, least troubled about the international outside his compound.

Despite negativity, BJP has takers in North Goa

“I’m in a vacation mood,” he instructed a crew of IdealNews reporters who landed at his doorstep unannounced.

The former leader minister has actively campaigned for the birthday party and Shripad Naik on the Lok Sabha elections, but has consciously stayed away from Mandrem. His home turf has observed Dayanand Sopte—a Congress defector—being given BJP price tag for the Mandrem bypolls, but Parsekar’s silence has created plenty of unease. Will he, gained’t he, remains the query, not up to 48 hours earlier than the constituency goes to polls.

The bypoll is too with reference to be referred to as, although given the department of votes between Bhabi Bagkar (Congress) and Arolkar, Sopte may finally end up having the final snicker.

“I cannot are expecting the meeting consequence but needless to say, BJP will take the lead, moderately conveniently, on the Lok Sabha election. Congress is far in the back of,” said one polling professional from the area, recognized to have his ear to the bottom.

That Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Naik are finding favour will also be heard in within reach Mapusa too. Ashish Shirodkar, an impartial candidate who's contesting the bypoll in Mapusa, is getting ready to make an “affect” on the final day of campaigning together with his autorickshaw rally. There are about 30 coated up at Ganeshpuri and joining them are 50 bikes.

“In Mapusa, there is a BJP wave, however it’s no longer for Joshua (de Sousa),” said Shirodkar, who's locking horns with the previous deputy leader minister’s son.

When BJP has made most commonly unfavorable headlines, why are they nonetheless ahead in the Lok Sabha race, even though marginally? When Shripad has been elected for 4 consecutive terms, been an MP for 20 years and minister for two terms, why doesn’t somebody have anything bad to say about him?

“That is an interesting query. But look around and possibly you will uncover the answer,” said a BJP panch from St Andre constituency, a Congress stronghold. It is here that Congress’ hand is maximum visible. Since the entry of Atanasio Monserrate, Congress has been revitalised in Tiswadi with Taleigao, St Cruz and St Andre all getting a timely boost.

MLAs who were hiding at home are actually out in the open, garnering reinforce for the birthday party. One MLA, suspected of being on the shopping listing of BJP, has began “overtly looking for votes” for Congress. That’s moderately a turnaround.

As you power ahead from Goa Velha to Dongri, one eager voter has just announced his own U-turn.

“I voted for (Francisco) Silveira during the meeting elections, but now my vote is for BJP,” he instructed TOI. The others, a couple of dozen of them, all punch inebriated and eager to make their voice heard in the midst of the night, cheer him. They are BJP sympathisers.

“Nobody has given us jobs. Shripad can not do much construction, but we can vote for BJP. Shripad is a nice man. He merits our reinforce, once more,” said an artist, who's now on a distinct top.

It may not occur in all places, but here in North Goa, great guys do end first.
